Free The Nipple - The Asian Way

It's October which means Pinktober = Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I've wanted to posted this in a while but not sure how to construct it. So here goes.....

Free The Nipple
Free The Nipple started back in May this year by Scout Willis (Bruce Willis' daughter) who walked half-naked along New York city because Instagram blocked her posts:
  1. Of a jacket that has two topless ladies emblazoned on it
  2. Her picture in a sheer top
Non which was provocative. Her point was that it's legal to walk topless in NYC yet not allowed to be topless in instagram.

In US, there's censorship in the media whereby it is illegal in 37 states for women to appear topless.

Back in June there's this wave of campaign on Free The Nipple at New Yock city with ladies coming out together topless and walk around NYC. Then we have Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne who also bring this to a highlight...

The fight
So, the entire campaign was to fight for equality.

Back in the 1930s, men were not allowed to go topless as well. That time, four men were arrested for going topless at Coney Island. Then men fought, they were heard, changing not only laws but social consciousness. And by 1936, men's bare chests were accepted as the norm. 'So why is it that 80 years later women can't seem to achieve the same for their chest' said Scout Willis.

This photo by Cara Delevinge (posted on her Instagram) makes very much sense. What's the difference between a man's nipple and female? What's the difference between the breast? It's still human flesh.

Instagram also removed photos of mothers who were breastfeeding their babies if the areola was exposed. People are coming out to speak for mothers as well because it's suddenly become something 'wrong' to breastfeed babies. It makes it as if the mothers are trying to be revealing and being sexy here.

Breastfeeding in the public has received attention for quite some time and nothing much has been improved since then. It's actually a proud thing that a mother can actually take up the courage to breastfeed her hungry baby and yet there are people who harassed them.

Do you know how dirty is it to breastfeed in the toilet? You can get a mother-baby room in the malls but there are many other public places that don't provide such facilities. What's the difference between eating in a public toilet to the baby while he/she was being fed in the toilet?

And it also increased bacteria infection to the milk when a mother express breast milk in the toilet during working hours as there's no such facilities in the offices.

The Asian
We (majority of us) are conservative and old school in thinking. Breaking the norm and asking us to go completely topless is definitely a no for Asian women. Going out bra-less is already a challenge if people were to advocate it. It's not an Asian thing to go without a bra especially we prefer to conceal our breasts and nipples from people's stare and words.

So, what has this got to do with breast cancer? All I want to highlight is to be aware of your own body. Don't let society stereotype you that your breast should only be seen as a sexual assets.

It's a common thing in certain place in the world such as this...

and when it's exhibited in our countries, they are deemed as a work of art and why not in Asia or the world? If you were to say that they are native tribes and uncivilised, then they should be more conservative than we do right?

Stay comfortable with your own body and don't let society condone you into being whom you should be.

Like how Scout Willis put it "woman has the right to choose how she represents her body - and to make that choice based on personal desire and not a fear of how people will react to her or how society will judge her. No woman should be made to feel ashamed of her body."

Don't cover it up. You fear people checking out your breast especially men ogling over it but in doing this, you also forget to check your own breast. Do you pay attention to the changes of your breast? Is there any lump in it?

Do you know?

Instead of maintaining your breast in shape, bra speeds up the sagging process! I'm not just all talk but results from a 15-year study in France states that "bra actually has no benefits for women. In fact, it may actually do your breasts more harm than good over time". When you wear bra, you rely heavily on it for the support from gravity and with time, without a bra, you breast will sag. However, when you are braless, your breast will developed more muscle tissues for natural support. With bra, it prevents the growth of the tissue and as such accelerate sagging.

Wait.......... If you have been wearing bra for as long as you can remember, the research said that the 'damage' has already taken its course.

You will be asking, since it's already damaged, why should I then removed my bra? I will need that support so I look great!

It's not too late if you are still young. Your body cell is still growing and changing everyday. Do you remember the relieve you felt every time you unbuckle your bra? Why not just go bra less when you are at home or at the least, when you are sleeping?
